Walking to St. Nikolai
Tante Rili and Walli

Tante Rili lead us on a walk to St. Nikolai. This is the path she and Mom walked to school as children. It took about an hour to reach St. Nikolai.

On the way, Tante Rili taught us an old folk saying said while picking the flower petals from a margarita (daisy) . . .

Er liebt mich...
...von Herzen
...mit Schmerzen
...ein bisschen
...ein wenig
...oder gar nicht.
. . . and she pointed out the changing architecture of the buildings and how to distinguish the old ones from the new ones. We learned that the vents in the facades of the pitched roofs are functional as well as decorative and that the fields are planted with corn, sage, rye, and soybeans. We saw a man putting up hay with an old, wooden, three-pronged pitch fork. We also saw some ducks and a rea (a rea is like a deer, but smaller). The scenery was beautiful. The sights and smells were wonderfully nostalgic. The walk was just what we needed.

Before returning home, Onkel Karl drove us to a vineyard where he showed us the highest berg in Sausal and the last highest berg before the flatland begins. We then took the scenic route over the winding roads and through the hilly counryside back to Flamberg.
