Day Four
Tuesday, September 3, 2002

The morning started misty, rainy, and breezy. It was obvious that we would not be portaging to Alpine Lake that day. We put up more tarps to protect us from the rain and wind.

Tarps

As the day progressed, the weather cleared up. We considered breaking camp after lunch but decided to stay. Kate, Bonnie, and Richard paddled over to check out the portage.

Jeff and I stayed behind to prepare for our last evening at this campsite.

Sunset at Camp Two.
The dip on the horizon is where the portage to Alpine Lake is.
Our campsite was very near the worst of the blowdown of 1999. You can see some of the damage here.

That evening, we saw unbelievable northern lights. They shimmered white for what seemed like hours. They streaked across the sky above us and danced wildly. We were in awe at the performance.

Jeff and I brought our sleeping bag and pillows out to get a better view of the show. Soon, we started dozing off. The cold dampness of the evening forced us back into our tent.
