After a filling breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs with mushrooms and cheese, and English muffins, we broke camp and started out.
We were forced to dock on a small island, and we had an impromptu lunch on the rocks -- turkey and cheese sandwiches.
While eating, dark clouds threatened.
Rain appeared imminent.
We quickened our lunch in order make the crossing before the storm hit.
Day Two
Sunday, September 1, 2002
The stars were out when we went to sleep, but at some point in the night, it rained.
We did not take the time to put tarps over our tents the night before, but, luckily, our tents weathered the winds and rains in spite of not having the extra shelter.
The weather appeared good.
We planned to stop for lunch at a campsite before crossing a large part of Seagull Lake.
But once again our plans were foiled; our lunch site was occupied.
Our second campsite was chosen because of it's location near the portage to Alpine Lake, and we discovered, happily, that it was open.
We immediately set up our tents and a tarp to protect us from the rain.

The dark clouds passed us by, and we spent a leisurely evening over a dinner of hot dogs, brats, and potato salad.
We enjoyed a campfire. As you can see, headlamps became part of our nightly fashion.
Our original plan was to portage our boats (without gear) to Alpine Lake the next day a day paddle. The group, however, wanted a kick-back day, so we decided to stay an extra day at this campsite.
